Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Cancer Patients: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Introduction: Cancer cases in the world reached 19.2 million people in 2020. The most common side effect of cancer treatment with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, bone marrow transplantation, or certain biological response modifiers is fatigue. Complementary therapy is a simple intervention without side effects but provides great benefits for cancer patients to reduce the side effects of chemotherapy Methode: A systematic review was carried out using three electronic databases, namely PubMed, Science Direct, and Google Shoolar. Instrument: Guide in reviewing journals using PRISMA. Result and Analysis: The articles reviewed discussed complementary and alternative medicine therapy in cancer patients with a cross sectional design, from 11 research results more than 54% used spiritual methods followed by herbal therapy and natural nutrition and traditional Chinese medicine. Cancer patients who use CAM are mostly women. Discussion and Conclusion: The use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) can reduce the side effects of chemotherapy, increase self-confidence, reduce anxiety, increase endurance, improve well-being and improve quality of life.
