The Role of Digital Health Engagement in Improving Self-Care Behavior among Patients with Heart Failure

Abstract

Heart failure is a chronic disease with high rates of morbidity and rehospitalization, requiring effective management strategies. Digital health engagement has emerged as an innovative approach to improving self-care behaviour through the utilization of digital technologies such as mHealth, telehealth, and telemonitoring. This study aimed to analyze the role of digital health engagement on self-care behaviour among patients with heart failure using a systematic literature review method based on the PRISMA guidelines. The literature search was conducted using the PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases with a publication range from 2022 to 2026. Article selection was performed using inclusion and exclusion criteria, and quality assessment was conducted using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) appraisal tool. A total of eight articles with Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) designs were analyzed in this study. The synthesis results showed that digital interventions, including mobile applications, telemonitoring, wearable devices, virtual health coaching, and telerehabilitation, were effective in improving self-care behaviour, adherence to health monitoring, symptom management, physical activity, and patients’ quality of life. Interventions based on personalized feedback and real-time monitoring demonstrated more optimal outcomes. In addition, digital health also improved self-efficacy and reduced caregiver stress. However, its effectiveness on long-term clinical outcomes still demonstrated variable results. Digital health engagement has the potential to support patient-centered care management for heart failure.
