Effect of Mirror Therapy on Upper Extremity Motor Function in Stroke Patients

Abstract

Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability and often results in impaired upper extremity motor function, which affects daily activities and quality of life. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of mirror therapy in improving upper extremity motor function in stroke patients. This study used a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. A total of 50 respondents were selected using consecutive sampling and divided into intervention and control groups, each consisting of 25 respondents. The intervention group received mirror therapy, while the control group received routine hospital therapy. Motor function was measured using the Fugl-Meyer Assessment for Upper Extremity (FMA-UE). The results showed improvement in both groups. The intervention group’s mean score increased from 52.32 to 55.88, while the control group’s score increased from 48.40 to 49.32. Statistical analysis showed significant improvements before and after intervention in both groups; however, no significant difference was found between groups after intervention (p=0.110). Mirror therapy may contribute to improvements in upper extremity motor function when used alongside routine rehabilitation. However, its superiority over routine rehabilitation alone was not demonstrated in this study.
