Abstract

The use of film in history learning is increasingly common, but studies on film to understand the concept of colonial power relations are still limited. Through the film Bumi Manusia, this study aims to describe the representation of colonial power relations in discursive, non-discursive practices, and the materialization of discourse; analyze the theorization of the theme of colonial power relations and the form of resistance of the character Minke; and explore its potential as a source of historical learning. The study uses the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) method. Data collection and analysis were carried out using the Jäger & Maier model of thematic document analysis. The results of the study show (1) The film Bumi Manusia represents colonial power relations through the use of language, actions, and visual symbols that reflect domination and social inequality between Europeans and indigenous peoples; (2) The resistance of the character Minke to hegemonic relations emphasizes the importance of the role of education as an instrument of liberation from social injustice; (3) The film Bumi Manusia has the potential to be a source of historical learning that fosters critical thinking skills, historical awareness, and learning motivation through deep learning strategies. This study contributes to enriching history learning strategies in understanding the concept of colonial power relations according to the student’s context.
